On January 8th, 2024, the Port’s Harbor Master’s Office organized a major crisis simulation exercise, mobilizing Tanger Med Port Authority’s Crisis Management Unit. The scenario involved a “Car fire on board a Car Carrier vessel at the PTM1 Vehicle Terminal.”

The exercise involved members of TMPA’s Crisis Management Unit, the Port Command Post, field intervention teams (Safety Brigade and medical team from the emergency care center), as well as two experts from SMIT Salvage, along with representatives from the terminal and the shipping company.

The aim of this exercise was to test and evaluate the following:

  • Test the preparedness of Response Teams and intervention teams in the face of a potential crisis.
  • Evaluate the implementation of fire notification, warning, response, and rescue procedures, both on the ship’s side and on the Port Authority’s side.
  • Measure the responsiveness of crisis management teams to requests for information from customers, partners, authorities, and stakeholders, as well as to media and political pressure.
  • Test the coordination and responsiveness of the various players and stakeholders.
  • Assess the availability and adequacy of the Port Authority’s response resources.
  • Familiarize shore-based response teams with a fire aboard a Car Carrier vessel.
  • Assess the impact of the event on the continuity of Port operations.
